Old Professions of Srodmiescie
„Old Professions” is the leading project of House of Peace Foundation, which takes interest and care in craftsmen who are still performing dying out professions as leather-worker, ironworker, shoemaker, goldsmith…
„Old Professions” Project was co-financed by EU funds, through “Youth in Action” Programme and by Wroclaw Municipality. As a result one of alternative touristic tracks in Wroclaw were created which were promoted in form of map accessible in touristic points and online guide. Except pointed on the map old professions, it was possible to have a look in workshops themselves – through photographs, records of working machines’ sounds, owners’ stories - and to learn more about performed by them professions. During project photography workshops were run for youth, and it was finished by vernisage of works in “Klub Pod Kolumnami”.
We created team of young fascinates – historians of fine art, historians, political scientists, european science students, educators from social centers, students and graduates form Wroclaw Polytechnic who participated voluntary in preparing online map. to collect materials we want to invite disadvantaged youth from social centers in the district. Wroclaw, as the city of many cultures and rich history of various people, is the ideal place to create a diary of everyday life of its citizens. It should take place in respect to tradition as a source of wisdom and experience. At the same time, so it could help to understand nowadays politicial, economical and cultural situation.
Furthermore, the fact that we have moved into the city where other people used to live and we use benefits of their work – apartments, factories, infrastructure – is the argument for keeping in memory and paying respect to their histories and gives a pretext to peaceful inter-cultural dialog. We hope we have managed to show youth that their lives are based in historic space where for many centuries many cultures and nations were co-existing.
